INSTRUCTIONS

MIB JAN 2023_Design Principles GCD60804

Lecture Recap :

Week 1: Introduce the flow of the semester with each assignment brief. Watch the video and slides (class materials) that explains about all the elements and principles of the design. It is helpful to start and create own principle design.

Week 2: 1. Final progress check what I am working on the exercises with lecturer's feedback.
               2. Change and finalize my 2 chosen designs.

Assignment brief Recap :

Description

Select 2 design principles from the list below: 1. Gestalt theory 2. Contrast 3. Emphasis 4. Balance 5. Repetition 6. Movement 7. Harmony & Unity 8. Symbol 9. Word and Image
Create 1 design for each chosen principle.
PROGRESS: On the week you are working on the exercises, discuss and show your progress to your lecturer during class.

Requirements

For materials, you may use any of your choice, but do consider their suitability to best express your ideas.
In your EXERCISES post in the blog, each design should contain: 1. a recap of the selected design principle 2. your design process: 2.1 visual references (designs that have inspired your own) 2.2 1-2 idea explorations with short description 2.3 final design in A4 size, JPEG file, & a short rationale 2.4 feedback given by the lecturer
At the end of the Exercises post, write a reflection about what you have learnt and discovered from this experience. If you have any photographs as final submission or idea exploration, make sure that they are clear, taken from various angles and properly cropped.

Learning Goals

1. To describe the understanding and knowledge of design principles. 2. To demonstrate the understanding and knowledge of design principles in work of design.

Exercises :

1st Design Principle

REPETITION
The design principle of repetition refers to the use of similar (or identical) elements throughout a design.
  • Create 1 Design For Each Chosen Principle
VISUAL REFERENCE

These 2 images are the resources that I refer to my designs. The points of these design are the shadow and the regular arrangement of diagonals with 2 objects which make it stand out.

IDEA EXPLORATIONS WITH SHORT DESCRIPTION

This is the main character that I totally created by myself by the Adobe Photoshop. I tried to create a bee as simple.
Figure 1.3  l  Main Character (Bee)

This arrangement is the one that I refer to above visual references as repetition in design principle.

Figure 1.4  l  Repetition Draft

These 3 are my final drafts of repetition before I choose the final design of my chosen design principle. I added a few backgrounds which are related to bee such as grass, flower and sky with a small flower. I used color combinations, bees and suitable backgrounds to make all my designs stand out.

FEEDBACK For the repetition design, draft #3 was the one that lecturer suggest me to finalize as it is the most interesting among the 3 attempts. Because, there is variation between shapes and colors in this design.

FINAL DESIGN

After feedback, I decided to choose 3rd draft as a final design for repetition. There are some steps to finalize my design. First of all, this is my visual reference as an image to create my main character, bee. The reason why I choose bee is because of the harmony with flowers. I thought it can be good harmony when I wanted to do repetition with them.

This is my final sketch as drawing to create the final design by Adobe Photoshop. I arranged regularly using flowers and bees.

Figure 1.9  l  Idea sketch for final repetition design

I totally used by Adobe photoshop to create a design. And, this is the process of creating a bee. It is separated by each part as a group (body/wings/cheeks). I mostly used a pen tool to create my own shape. I tried to make it cute and simple.

This is the process of arranging bees and flowers regularly and combinations of various colors to match. So, this is my final arrangement for repetition.

I finally add a background as blue to be stood out visually.

Figure 1.12  l  Final progress

Finally, this is my final design for repetition in design principle created by Adobe photoshop. This design idea was the best harmony with the design principle of repetition because the variety of colors.

Exercises :

2nd Design Principle

EMPHASIS
Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer's attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
  • Create 1 Design For Each Chosen Principle
VISUAL REFERENCE

These 2 images are the resources that I refer to my 2nd design which is emphasis in design principle. The points of these design are the shadow and a prominent combination of colors between a uniform array of colors which make it stand out to the viewers. I decided to use a combination of bright colors between dark colors and tried to create a heart shape using flamingos.

IDEA EXPLORATIONS WITH SHORT DESCRIPTION

This is the main character that I totally created by myself by the Adobe Photoshop. I tried to create a flamingo as noticeable.
Figure 2.3  l  Main Character (Flamingo)

So, for this draft of design(Emphasis), to further emphasize the pink flamingo, I unified all the colors of the flamingo as a dark gray except the pink flamingo to be emphasized. For this purpose, the flamingos were also properly arranged for my 2nd design as well. These 2 designs are my final drafts as emphasis in design principle. I tried to make it as simple and noticeable by adding a spotlight or the sun with the dark ground.

Figure 2.4  l  1st draft for emphasis design

Figure 2.5  l  2nd draft for emphasis design

FEEDBACK As for emphasis, lecturer suggest me to improve my draft #2 a bit more by: 1. converting the shape between the beaks of the swans into a heart shape. 2. remove the black swans on both sides 3. change the pink swans to white

FINAL DESIGN

After feedback, I decided to choose 2nd draft as a final design for emphasis. There are some steps to finalize my design. First of all, this is my visual reference as an image to create my final main character, flamingo. The reason why I chose flamingo is that they looked beautiful when they stick together like behind the image. It was really impressed for me, and I like the mood of sunset as well.

Figure 2.6  l  Visual Reference

This is my final sketch as drawing before I create the final design by Adobe Photoshop. I created a flamingo to stick together to make a heart shape with the sun behind flamingos.
Figure 2.7  l  Idea sketch for final emphasis design

I totally used by Adobe photoshop to create a design as well. And, this is the process of creating a flamingo. Firstly, It was not a perfect heart shape with 2 flamingos before I get a feedback from lecturer. And the color of flamingo was a pink.

Figure 2.8  l  Progress of main character 1

But after I got feedback, I used a pen tool to make a perfect heart with 2 flamingos. And the heart shape suits perfectly after I rearrange.

Figure 2.9  l  Progress of main character 2

Figure 2.10  l  Progress of main character 3

I finally add a background as against the backdrop of sunset with the sun and some dark asphalt as a ground.

Figure 2.11  l  Final progress with background

I finally add some more visual objects (clouds and gulls) at empty space. So, t
his is my final design for emphasis in design principle created by Adobe photoshop. These flamingos with the sunset behind makes a good harmony as I think. The shape of heart by these subjects is what I wanted to emphasize.

REFLECTION

In the two weeks that were quite short, I was very helpful in understanding and performing this first task by looking at the definitions of various design principles and the appropriate visual references. Videos and other materials on the principles of design provided by the professor filled my knowledge and helped me a lot. When I didn't know the principle of design, when I looked at digital design, I only pursued aesthetically pretty things and looked at them, but now it was a meaningful task because I had the knowledge to understand and observe the design principles in each design poster.

Before I started this assignment, I searched and researched several references and realized that I came up with several rough ideas of my own, and I thought I should study and improve my own individual creativity.

To sum up, I learned how to use each design principle properly and how to put appropriate principles into my digital design, and I should try to use them well for my future projects.
