Lecture Recap :
Week 3: This week needs to show a mind map for myself and visual references for the ideas of self-portrait at least as my first progress-check. I got confirmed to go with my 3 ideas by lecturer but she noticed me to do my own creative ideas with different composition since my references are quite similar with my idea.
Week 4: This week, the lecturer checked the last progress for my project 1. I needed to prepare my 3 idea sketch with rationale and some progress of my blog. She chose the best piece among my 3 idea sketch and gave some feedback on it.
Assignment brief Recap :
Description
Create a portrait of yourself by applying the various principles that you had learnt through these weeks.
The self-portrait gives the student the opportunity to research both traditional and modern forms of self-expression, as well as to examine the design concepts discussed, which will help them decide on their own course of action. They can now use any form of media and even think about doing digital or 3D work. The classroom serves as a laboratory for discussion, experimentation, and critique, much as it did during the first several weeks of class. Through critiques with the professors individually or with the class as a whole, students examine a variety of options and are better able to predict a result. The work of other designers and artists is also urged to be examined critically and historically.
PROGRESS: Discuss and present your progress to your instructor in class the week that you are working on this project.
Requirements
Think on the experiences you have had in life, such as your ethnicity, family, friends, school years, favorite hangouts, favorite foods, musicians, etc. Pay attention to the people, animals, signs, buildings, vegetation, and other objects in your environment. Draw these, take photos of them, or record them on video. Take a look at each of the images you gathered. In order to make an A4-sized portrait of oneself, choose images that are meaningful and fascinating to you. You may then translate these images into a design piece. Do not forget to incorporate design principles into your work. Any materials are acceptable as long as they help to best represent your idea. Include the following information in your PROJECT 1 - SELF - PORTRAIT blog post:
1. a recap of Project 1 brief
2. your design process:
2.1 visual references(designs that have inspired your own)
2.2 2-3 idea exploration with short descriptions
2.3 final outcome in JPEG (A4 size) and a rationale
2.4 feedback given by the lecturer
2.5 a reflection about what you have learnt and discovered from Project 1.
Learning Goals
1. To practice the knowledge of design principles.
2. To express a message through a work of design.
3. To identify suitable materials and composition for visual communication.
PROJECT 1:
SELF-PORTRAIT
1. Brief Recap
Overall, an aim of this assignment is to create my own self-portrait with a mind-map which indicates about myself such as my interests, my likes & dislikes, my favorite things and hobbies that can introduce me. Week 2 was the lecturer's brief time for details of the project 1 assignment. Week 3 requires us to show our progress to get lecturer's feedback. What we supposed to do is thinking our own designs and research for the visual references for my design and also mind-map for myself.
2. Visual References
These are my visual references that I'm going to refer to my own design for self-portrait. Basically, I will create based on these researched references of self-portrait design ideas for my 3 designs.

Figure 1.4 l Reference 2 for Idea #2

3. Idea Exploration
This is a mind-map to express myself in my self-portrait. It mostly consists of the things that I like as a food and a hobby, my interests, my personality and the things that I don't like.
Figure 1.7 l A mind map about myself
I currently have a blue-black colored hair, and I used this image as my visual reference to draw myself in my self portrait.
I have totally 3 sketches based on the visual references above. My first sketch idea for self-portrait has a 'emphasis' and 'contrast' in design principles. I choose interest, especially 'film industry' in my mind map for this idea which is my biggest interest and related to my future dream job. The cinema as a background is linked to the director in the film photograph as well.
Figure 1.9 l Sketch Idea 1
To complete the design principle of contrast & emphasis, I will use colorful bright colors for a hand and a film photograph instead of darkening all the backgrounds, including the movie theater.
For the second sketch idea, this rough sketch also refers to the visual references for Idea #2 as well. It consists my favorite foods (e.g. banana milk, chicken, pineapple, sandwich, pasta, sushi and tteokbokki) in my mind map. My second idea sketch shows that I am imagining my own favorite food as you can see in my mind map.
Figure 1.11 l Sketch Idea 2
I use 'harmony' among design principles by using a variety of colors. I aimed to color myself and the background with pastel colors, and to emphasize the food more eye-catching by coloring the food with bright colors.
Figure 1.12 l Coloring progress for Sketch Idea 2
For my third sketch idea, I draw myself in the middle and includes my hobbies, especially, watching movie or drama, drawing, camping and traveling among my hobbies in mind map at the side with the cartoon frame.
Figure 1.13 l Sketch Idea 3
This third idea sketch for self portrait includes 'emphasis & harmony' in design principles. I wanted to emphasize myself the most in this design and make the hobbies on each side stand out next. So, when I was coloring myself, I used RGB colors instead of pastel colors with bright and dark colors in harmony.
Figure 1.14 l Coloring progress for Sketch Idea 3
So, this is my final outcome for idea #3. I colored all my hobbies and myself in harmony by using mostly RGB colors. To emphasize myself in the middle, I used dark gray colors for the frame and change the drawing of my hobbies' opacity to 70 percent .
FEEDBACK I showed my each outcomes of my 3 idea sketch for self portrait. Lecturer recommended me to finalize Idea sketch #1 because it is the most important intention of this project, which is 'representing me' as showing my dream job to be noticeable, and also the design principle I used is the most accurate well than others. And she said it is more attractive, creative, and most noticeable than other idea sketches. To be better the outcome for idea #1, she mentioned that it will be the best if I enlarge the size of film photograph in the middle and move a hand to down to be more eye-catching.
FINAL DESIGN
These are my visual references as an image of director's chair and the stuffs to refer to draw a director in the middle more perfect.
Figure 1.16 l Visual reference 1
Figure 1.17 l Visual reference 2
These are the steps that I finalize my idea sketch 1 after feedback. Firstly, I resized the film photograph with myself as director in it as bigger as lecturer recommend me to do
Figure 1.18 l Progress of final design outcome
I neatly followed all the lines based on my sketch and separated the layers into three sections. You can see that it's much cleaner compared to the my sketch before.
Figure 1.19 l Progress of final design outcome
I lowered the opacity as 87% for the background(cinema) to let the main emphasis part (film photograph) to be more eye-catching to follow the design principle of emphasis and contrast.
Figure 1.20 l Progress of final design outcome
After then, I finalized my self portrait by coloring all layers. I colored dark gray for the background and only yellow color for the light. I used a variety of colors in harmony for the film photograph as it is the main subject to show myself for this design.
Figure 1.21 l Progress of final design outcome
This is my final outcome for self portrait after a feedback. This design shows myself the most as I want to be a director, especially in movie industry. A director is the one of my important things that I want to introduce myself. So, I wanted to emphasize 'a director' in the film photograph, so I choose the cinema as a background. As you know, cinema is basically in dark mood, so I thought it will help to emphasize me and it also links to my main interests and hobbies. This is the one who I am. So it should be suitable to the aim of this project as well.
REFLECTION Actually, I'm a person who doesn't have much interest in myself, such as looking back on myself or what I like, what my recent interests are, what kind of person I am, etc. So while doing this project, when I was doing mind map, I had time to find out what I was interested in these days and what changed from before, and it was a meaningful project to look back on myself.
Through this project, I realized that it is important that when I draw my self-portrait, I draw myself that I want to show the most through a mind map so that people who see me can sympathize and get to know me when they see my work. I was usually interested in painting, but I was not good at drawing, so I had a lot of difficulties in creating and drawing my own design, but it was also much easier when I first thought about what I wanted to put in this design like a mind map and started drawing.
Overall, I had a hard time working on this project, but I enjoyed it and it was meaningful. My final design can't seem perfect to everyone, but it seems to me to be a satisfactory result.
