LECTURES

Week 10: Light & Shadow

We learned about illustrative elements and chiaroscuro, lights, and shadows. Chiaroscuro is an Italian phrase that literally translates as "light-dark." The description in paintings refers to strong tonal contrasts that are frequently utilized to represent the volume and modeling of the subjects shown. Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio are two artists known for their use of chiaroscuro.

Week 11: Ornaments

We learned about ornaments, how to design patterns, drawing modes, and the width tool.

Week 12: Progression Check

We are supposed to show our progression of Project 3 to the lecturer. The progress we should include this week was my chosen story's central characters, setup, conflict, and resolutions as storytelling basics, and divide as 3 acts structure within the chosen story and also a rough idea sketch draft.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 3: Digital Triptych

For Project 3, we need to choose a story from the website given by the lecturer. And we break down the narrative of the chosen story into 3 act structures of Introduction-Climax-Epilogue. Then we should create 3 panels of digital triptych illustrating each of the acts.

The challenges for Project 3 are:
1. Only one story from the given website: https://poestories.com/stories.php
2. We can't use other stories than the ones from the website
3. Visuals are displayed in a series of three
4. Include short non-spoiler text for each act.

And the requirement for the format is 300 px * 600 px for each structure.

I chose 'The Facts in the Case of M. VAldemar' as my story to continue on a digital triptych. I read about 10 stories from the given website. There were quite funny and simple stories that can be good to design as a digital triptych. But I wanted to choose a deep storyline which can be hard to design as a digital triptych to challenge myself. My chosen story is a kind of deep story that is related to death and mesmerization.

Central Characters
The main characters of this story are M. Ernest Valdemar (Dying, frail man; recipient of mesmerism) and the mesmerist (Narrator; a practitioner of mesmerism).

Setup
The narrator introduces himself as a man who has been interested in mesmerization for the past three years and has wondered what would happen to a person if they were mesmerized at the moment of death.

Conflict
The mesmerist chose M. Ernest Valdemar, a patient with pulmonary tuberculosis, who was most suitable for the experiment to solve the questions the mesmerist had. The mesmerist mesmerize M. Ernest Valdemar, who was about to die, and it worked. The mesmerist exchanged conversations with M. Ernest Valdemar, who had already died through hypnosis.

Resolution
Valdemar has been under hypnosis for seven months. The mesmerist and doctors decide to wake Valdemar to see what will happen. Valdemar screams out that he's dead and disintegrates into a rotten and glutinous mass.

3-Acts Structure

Act 1 - Setup

Once upon a time, there was a narrator, a man who has been fascinated by mesmerization for the past three years and had wondered what would happen to a person if they were mesmerized to the point of death. The mesmerist recalls why he chose the subject upon which to test his mesmerization techniques. He had mesmerized Valdemar before, but Valdemar had always fallen into a trance-like state easily, and Valdemar is nonchalant about his terminal illness. He also doesn't have any family who would protest against the experiment.

Act 2 - Conflict

One day, the mesmerist decided to mesmerize M. Ernest Valdemar, who is about to die due to pulmonary tuberculosis to experiment on how it happens to Valdemar if he is mesmerized to the point of death. The mesmerist appears at Valdemar's bedside within 45 minutes to begin the mesmerization process when he is near death. Because of that, Valdemar quickly falls into a perfect mesmerized state. The doctors are amazed that he hasn't died yet. The mesmerist and Valdemar keep talking to each other while mesmerization even though his body is dead. Because of that too, he remains in this state for seven months.

Act 3 - Resolution

Finally, the mesmerist and doctors decide to wake Valdemar to see what will happen. Valdemar's eyes start leaking a fetid fluid when the mesmerist first tries to rouse him. The mesmerist asks Valdemar what he feels or desires, and he says that he wants to be awakened or put back to sleep because he is dead. The mesmerist awakens him and presumes that he will wake to consciousness. Instead, he screams out that he's dead and disintegrates into a rotten and glutinous mass.

I first tried to sketch my design idea with a rough sketch draft before digitization.

Based on the draft, I sketch each act in detail based on the rough draft and 3 acts structure. Below are the sketches for each act structure.

Figure 2.2    |    Final Idea sketch

I tried to create 3 acts to be the bright side to the dark side using the atmosphere in each panel such as a withering flower, a pale and morbid patient, and a darkening view of the outside.

Next, I move on to designing my digital triptych by digitization in Adobe Illustrator. I used various tools to design my panels by adding lights and shadows.

Explanation/Rationale
The artwork that I created for this project is to give a deep impression of each act by designing as bright to dark. And It makes a patient(protagonist) is going to die during mesmerization. And through these three panels, I tried to make the overall flow of the story noticeable at once.

FEEDBACK

Week 12: Since my chosen story is a dark story, it is a good breakdown, short and precise. As for the visuals, the flow is okay. So I can continue working on creating each act's panel. I can omit the foreground and just concentrate on the visual of the bed, patient, mesmerist, and doctors.

REFLECTIONS

I think this project took the most time and I was interested that much, and it was the most fun and thoughtful project I've ever done. Among the various stories, I was able to choose the story freely, and I chose a dark story that was a little deep because I wanted to challenge myself in this assignment. In the process of creating a digital triptych, it was used in a variety of ways using a lot of technical skills and tools, and in segmenting the story, I thought deeply about the design of each panel.

Since this task leads to the next task, the last animation task, I think I invested a lot of time and effort in designing more carefully. And I was able to actively utilize the skills and tools that I learned in the previous lecture in this project.
